Elija Donahue & Ms. Mayville
Elija- Welcome back to Grit Untapped News. I'm Elija Donahue. I'm a part of the Grit Untapped Newsroom Team. I'm Interviewing Ms. Mayville.
Elija- Do you think our Grit Untapped business benefits kids?
Ms. Mayville- I do think it does. It shows you there's a lot more entailed in jobs then just the one you’re doing.
Elija- Have you seen the Grit Untapped business grow since you've been here?
Ms. Mayville- Definitely. There’s now a wood boiling room over there rather than just a little shack we built on.
Elija- Do you think this will help the kids as they grow up?
Ms. Mayville- Definitely. It will show them how to organize themselves.
Elija- Do you think this business will look good on job applications?
Ms. Mayville- Definitely. People want to know that you have experience working with other people. Teamwork.
Elija- Last question. Pancakes or Waffles?
Ms. Mayville- Pancakes
All About Maple Syrup
Q: Who first discovered maple syrup as a sweetener?
A: The natives were the first to notice maple syrup and use it as a sweetener.
Q: How many gallons of sap can one tree produce?
A: One tree can produce twenty gallons of sap.
Q: How long does it take to make the syrup?
A: It usually takes 2-3 weeks to make the syrup depending on the weather.
Q: How much sugar does fake syrup have compared to real syrup?
A: Fake syrup usually uses 13g of sugar, but most real syrup only has about 4g of syrup.
Q: What would I need to make my own syrup at home?
A: You will need a drill with a drill bit to make a small hole in the tree, and a sap line and bucket to collect the sap, once you get your sap you will need to boil it down into the syrup.
Q: How does fake syrup effect the outcome of the maple recipes?
A: Fake syrup has more sugar, so using fake syrup could make the recipe come out more sweeter than intended.
Q: What are your most popular recipes to make?
A: Our most popular recipes include our maple popcorn, maple candies, and our maple cookies.
Q: How does the weather effect the amount of maple sap collected?
A: Having bad weather such as rain or snow could fill our buckets with water instead of the sap we need. Or cold weather could make the tree freeze up and make the sap flow a lot slower.
Q: When do you usually start to tap your trees?
A: We usually start from mid March to early April, but we are planning to start tapping in February for next year.
Q: Does tapping your tree damage the tree?
A: If you make the hole small enough, the tree will regrow the hole back over the winter.
