In May of 2014, physical science teacher, Mr. Rogers, traveled to a school in east Syracuse to observe their STEAM program. After returning from his trip, he convinced the other 8-2 team teachers to go and observe the program also. After a long discussion on the matter of starting a STEAM team at MMS, they decided it would be the best idea to start one. It’s a marvelous program that has only been around for two years, but it has flourished in that time.
STEAM stands for Social Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. It teaches students to persevere or to ‘Be Gritty,’ as we like to say. It also helps kids to excel in their common core classes by creating blocks of common teaching time so we can participate in cross-curricular activities and lessons. This team also teaches kids other skills they’ll need in life, such as social skills, survival skills, and business skills.
Last fall is when the adventure with ‘Grit Untapped’ began. The 8-2 teachers decided it would be a great idea to run a business. The idea was to help us experience what the real work world would be like, while weaving curriculum in throughout the life of the business. After students completed applications and resumes, students were given their job. The business consists of seven departments; The Newsroom, Candy and Confections, Data Collection, Media and Marketing, Research and Development, Design. Grit Untapped also has an accounting group that meets periodically along with our CEO that leads the charge.
Grit Untapped is a great way for us to experience real world things and become college and career ready. The STEAM Team and Grit Untapped have both been amazing.
